5 Elements and Human Emotions

Human emotions are often viewed as a chaotic storm, but ancient wisdom and modern psychology suggest it is actually a precise ecosystem. By understanding the “Emotional Mechanics” of how your feelings feed or fight one another, you can stop being a victim of your moods and start engineering your inner state. Chinese Medicine uses this cycle below to balance a person’s physical and emotional state. Each organ system is linked to an emotion. HT/SI stands for Heart and Small Intestine, SP/ST is Spleen and Stomach, LU/LI is Lung and Large Intestine, KD/BL is Kidney and Bladder, and LI/GB is Liver and Gall Bladder.

Generating Cycle: courage leads to joy, joy leads to rationale, rationale leads to empathy, empathy leads to will, will leads to courage

Controlling Cycle: anger affects rationale, worry affects will, fear affects joy, mania affects empathy, sadness affects courage

anger attacks rationale, attacked rationale will cause fear

fear attacks joy, attacked joy creates sadness

sadness attacks courage, attacked courage creates worry

worry attacks will, attacked will creates mania

mania attacks empathy, attacked empathy creates anger

The Upward Spiral: The Generating Cycle

When we are in a “flow state,” our emotions work in a virtuous circle. This cycle represents the blueprint for high performance and emotional intelligence:
  • Courage → Joy: Taking a leap of faith releases the tension of hesitation, leading to a natural “high” or sense of achievement.
  • Joy → Rationale: A positive mind is more expansive. When you are joyful, you can think clearly without the “tunnel vision” caused by stress.
  • Rationale → Empathy: Logical clarity allows you to see past your own biases, making it easier to understand the perspectives of others.
  • Empathy → Will: Connecting with a purpose larger than yourself provides the fuel (willpower) to keep going when things get tough.
  • Will → Courage: A strong resolve naturally builds the bravery needed to start the cycle all over again.

The Downward Spiral: The Controlling Cycle

When we feel “stuck,” it is usually because one emotion is acting as a parasite on another. This cycle explains why you can’t simply “think” your way out of a bad mood:
  • Anger poisons Rationale: You cannot make a sound decision while blinded by rage.
  • Worry drains Will: Overthinking the future paralyzes your ability to act in the present.
  • Fear suffocates Joy: You cannot be present and grateful if you are constantly looking over your shoulder.
  • Mania distorts Empathy: Hyper-fixation or erratic highs can make you lose touch with how your actions affect others.
  • Sadness erodes Courage: A heavy heart makes even the smallest step forward feel like climbing a mountain.

The Attack Chain: How We Break

If the Controlling Cycle is a slow leak, the Attack Chain is a total system failure. This shows how one unchecked emotion creates a domino effect:
  1. Anger breaks your logic (Rationale), which leaves you feeling vulnerable and creates Fear.
  2. Fear kills your Joy, and the absence of light inevitably brings Sadness.
  3. Sadness steals your Courage, and without bravery, you begin to Worry about every possible outcome.
  4. Worry breaks your Will, leading to a frantic, scattered mind (Mania).
  5. Mania destroys your Empathy, which causes social friction and results in more Anger.

How to Use This Information

You can use these cycles as a Diagnostic Map for your life.
  • Identify the “Break”: If you lack willpower, don’t just try to “work harder.” Look at the map: your Will is being attacked by Worry. To fix your Will, you must address the source of your Worry.
  • Apply the Antidote: If you are trapped in Sadness, the map shows that Sadness is attacking your Courage. To break the chain, perform one small act of bravery. That Courage will generate Joy, which will eventually restore your Rationale.
  • Emotional Maintenance: Use the Generating Cycle as a daily checklist. Ask yourself: “Have I been courageous today? Have I practiced empathy?” By consciously feeding one part of the cycle, you jumpstart the entire engine.

Conclusion

Emotions are not random; they are a sophisticated internal guidance system. By recognizing the difference between the Generating Cycle that builds us up and the Attack Chain that breaks us down, we gain the ultimate power: the ability to choose our next state of mind. Next time you feel overwhelmed, stop fighting the feeling and start tracing the cycle. The way out is usually hidden in the emotion you’re neglecting.
